Each time a major awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
